The idea
The .io genre got one thing profoundly right: respect for the player's time. You open a URL, get a name, press Play, and within a second you're in a live arena. No launcher, no account, no tutorial gate. Every session is yours to end — 45 seconds or 45 minutes.
CellSnake keeps that foundation and rebuilds the parts we felt the classics left on the table:
- A color system that matters. Your color isn't cosmetic — matching pellets are worth ×2.5. Strategy starts in the first second.
- Real newcomer protection. AI rivals actively avoid brand-new players for 60 seconds, and a spawn shield covers your first moments. Your first life is for learning, not dying at spawn.
- Progress you can feel. Milestones at 100, 250, 500 mass and up; survival celebrations at 60 seconds, 2 and 5 minutes. Every pellet counts toward something visible.
- Death that invites a comeback. The results screen doesn't say "you lost" — it shows your rank and exactly how far you were from the top 3. Then it respawns you in three seconds.
The technology
CellSnake isn't built on an off-the-shelf game engine. Every layer was a deliberate choice:
| Layer | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rendering | Canvas2D | Smooth 60fps on ordinary hardware — no GPU requirements, more devices can play. |
| Multiplayer | Colyseus + WebSocket | Server-authoritative physics with client-side prediction and reconciliation. |
| Interface | React + TypeScript + Vite | A fast, type-safe HUD that stays out of the render loop's way. |
| Infrastructure | Node.js + PM2 | Simple, observable, and comfortably handles hundreds of concurrent players. |
We measure everything. After every release we watch bounce rate, session length and respawn rate — if a change doesn't move the numbers for players, it doesn't stay.
The numbers so far
Recent measurable wins: bounce rate cut from 31% to under 10%, median session up 22%, and human-vs-human kills doubled as a share of all eliminations — the arena keeps getting more alive.
What's next
